Gym to Crag and Trad Basics

When: Monday, December 6th, 2021

Where: Joshua Tree National Park

Who: This course is intended for beginning and intermediate climbers. If you’ve never climbed outside you’ll learn a lot; if you already feel comfortable at a sport crag, you’ll also learn a lot about navigating a complex traditional climbing area like Joshua Tree.

What: We’ll go over safety principles and how to adjust your climbing technique from the gym to outdoors, including slab footwork and crack technique. We’ll teach safety principles, gear placement, anchor-building, lead climbing, backing yourself up on rappel, and more!

Cost: $180 per person

Crack Climbing & Advanced Anchors

When: Thursday, December 16th, 2021

Where: Joshua Tree National Park

Who: This course is intended for intermediate climbers who want to improve their skill and efficiency on traditional routes. We will climb classic cracks mainly in the 5.7 to 5.10 range. 

What: Practice on some of Joshua Tree’s finest routes! Work on your crack technique with two of the most experienced guides around, and learn to build better and more efficient anchors. This will be an active day focused on climbing a lot of really good cracks, with quick anchoring lessons sprinkled throughout.

Big Wall Skills… get ready for El Cap!

When: Friday, December 17th, 2021

Where: Joshua Tree National Park

Who: For experienced climbers interested in big wall routes.

What: Aid climbing, hauling techniques and anchoring skills for big wall routes. Depending on the experience level and goals of our participants, topics may include body-weight hauling, mechanical advantage systems, moving efficiently using direct aid, tricks for cleaning efficiently, setting up a portaledge, high-angle problem-solving, and speed climbing systems for in-a-day ascents.

Self Rescue… vertical problem-solving!

When: Tuesday, December 21st, 2021

Where: Joshua Tree National Park

Who: This course is intended for intermediate and advanced climbers.

What: Practice self rescue skills that could save your life in the mountains–belay escapes, hauls, lowers, rope ascension, and improvised rappels. You can do a lot with a belay device and a cordelette or some slings. Just say no to shiver-bivvies and helicopter rescues! Know how to get yourself out of trouble!

Heidi Wirtz is one of the most accomplished rock climbers of her generation, with major expeditions and first ascents all over the world. In addition to being a talented climber, guide and yoga instructor, she is a co-founder of Girls Education International and the founder and owner of Earth Play Retreats.
